The crop rotation is nearing again. Already during the summer holidays, the first orders for foils, ground cloths and stone wool slabs trickle in at Benfried. “All foils are made to measure by the manufacturer. Here we sort it for shipment to the customer. It is a big job every year, but also a lot of fun,” says Jelle Koop.

Shift work and storage space
Most customers do not only order foil, but everything needed to prepare the greenhouse for a new growing season. From high-wire hooks to Multigrow rockwool slabs. Benfried produces the latter in-house and that is sold by kilometers at a time. “Since everyone wants the new slabs by Christmas, we start production well in advance. We work day and night in shifts and rent space temporarily to store everything.”
Custom made stone wool slabs
Benfried offers two different slabs for vegetable growing. “The Multigrow Premium ensures a strong development of roots due to the lack of plant-unfriendly material. In addition, it is free from formaldehyde and ensures a stronger plant structure, so there is less chance of pests and diseases. The Multigrow Coarse Fiber has coarse fibers, which results in a longer slab life. The horizontal wool structure gives a better root ball all year round. ”Jelle explains that all Multigrow slabs are custom made. “That means that sizes, planting holes and packaging method are all customer-specific. That is an added value, but also a major challenge."
