Response to ‘low amount of enterprising young people’

Growers switch to housewives and consciously don’t hire students

While Greenhouse horticulture Netherlands tries to reach a younger target audience in the summer by using vlogs and even growers try to reach this group by a variety of actions (among others “Schenkeveld roert zich”), it appears that growers have trouble recruiting enough students. The younger generations are not enthusiastic about working in a greenhouse. In response, some growers are not as enthusiastic about hiring young people as they once were, they say in the AD newspaper.

Frank van Schie for example now mostly chooses to hire housewives and not students for his radish nursery Yilmaz. “We need to be able to build on our strengths and be sure they come our way. Leaving it all to chance, like with the youth, is not something we do.”
