Turkey: Cold weather drops efficiency in greenhouses in Bingol

Grower Abdurrahim Saridag: “I have been growing cucumbers in a greenhouse for the last 5 years. Bingol is located in the eastern region of Turkey and the climate conditions play an important role in the productivity we have from season to season. This season the weather was colder than usual and our productivity went down by 50 % which is consequently lowering our revenue and profits.

This year we have paid around 0.25 USD per seedling and I have purchased 8.000 seedlings in total. Additionally, I have paid another 400 USD for agricultural chemicals. We have received state support of 40 USD per 1.000 square meters but that is not enough. Fertilizer prices are especially high and we are receiving no support in this issue. We hope that state officials will visit our farms and identify the areas where they can support us in a better way.”
