The cooperative established by tomato growers in Kahramanmaras is officially opened with the participation of local officials to the opening ceremony. The tomato greenhouses were first built in 2007 in the area and were only a few hectares big but in time greenhouse tomato production rapidly increased and so did the areas covered by the greenhouses.
Currently, tomato greenhouses cover 65 hectares and the officials from cooperative officials hope that it will increase to 300 hectares within the next 5 years. Growers also hope that with the cooperative they will be in a much stronger negotiation position whilst marketing their products.
Tomato is one of the many products grown in the greenhouses in Kahramanmaras, a city located in the southeastern region of Turkey. Green pepper and cucumber are amongst other products which are being grown and greenhouse production has been developing rapidly in the city in the last decade.
