Netherlands: Only recycled plastic in vegetable packaging buckets

From now on, all Tommies vegetable packaging buckets will be made from materials that are entirely recycled. This is a new concept with many sustainable benefits. It was developed by the Dutch packaging specialist, Nedupack Thermoforming.

It is a simple calculation. The new packaging bucket for Tommies vegetables weighs five grams less than the old one. This bucket is from the innovative vegetable grower, Greenco. Six million of them will be sold this year. Six million times five grams is 30,000 kg less plastic.

However, the real progress is that only recycled plastic is used for the new packaging buckets. Thanks to 100% recycling, a staggering amount of plastic is no longer in circulation.

Save natural resources
Nedupack partnered with Greenco to develop this unique bucket for their tomato, cucumber, and bell pepper snack varieties. "It was an exciting challenge for us, which we gladly tackled," says Remco Brouwer, Nedupack Thermoforming's Sale Manager, in hindsight.

Yvonne van Lier is the Head of Marketing at Greenco. She says, “With this new packaging we are fully committed to the recycling of plastic. We believe in preserving valuable natural resources, not destroying them." Here, Greenco follows the Sustainable Packaging Knowledge Institute's (KIDV) advice.

Step by step
It was no small step. For this tomato grower, packaging is an invaluable sales point for their fresh products. "Much depends on this," explains Greenco's Yvonne van Lier. "With our packaging, we not only present our snack tomatoes to clients. That same packaging keeps the tomatoes fresh and prevents damage during transportation."

Nedupack guided Greenco step by step to the correct choice. Remco Brouwer: “We came up with 100% recycled plastic - so-called rPET material. If you want to move away from standard plastic, rPET offers the most green advantages for every possibility; more so than even cardboard. The buckets weigh less, so energy is also saved during transport. It is a green sum of sustainable benefits."
