Asparagus campaign finished, soft fruit and melons fully available

Photo Report: wholesale market Cologne

Within German wholesale, this year's asparagus campaign officially ended last weekend. The last regional 'White Gold' of the year arrived at Cologne's wholesale market in pleasing quantities, selling at good prices. Now the focus turns to berry fruits, drupes and melons from all over the world. FreshPlaza was on site in Cologne on Markstraße on Friday and spoke with local traders.

In addition to the seasonal products and the everyday business, the future relocation of the market is still a sensitive topic among the Cologne wholesalers. In 2023, the gates at the Marktstraße (in the heart of the Südstadt district) are to be finally closed and a completely new location in Marsdorf - next to the motorway between Cologne-West and Frechen - is to be built.

Despite the City Council's ambitious plans, negotiations between the city administration and the Cologne interest group are proceeding slowly. The interim results: A final decision on the future of the wholesale market has still not been made and the ground breaking ceremony for the new property is still pending. Uncertainty is rampant  in the marketplace.
