Last year, Norwegians bought 26,000 tons of cucumbers, of which 63 percent originated in Norway. This year, the demand for cucumbers is so large that even the largest cucumber grower had difficulties supplying all his customers. Stig Tore Laugen, Frostagrønt: "Even though we are running at full capacity, we cannot meet the demand of Bama and the supermarket chains."
The company has invested €3 million in expansion of the greenhouse complex, and has become the largest cucumber grower in Norway, with an annual yield of 3,000 tons with a greenhouse acreage of 2.3 hectares.
Instead of only nine months per year, Frostagrønt will now grow cucumbers year-round. The company will harvest 9 million cucumbers each year, which consumes 20 million kWh. To reduce the ecological footprint, a test with circular water supply is being conducted. The water which is not taken up by the plants, is reused.
The Norwegian Information Agency for Agriculture confirms that the demand for Norwegian cucumbers has increased. The cucumber takes the fourth place on the list of most popular vegetables, after tomatoes, carrots, and onions.
