Alternative transport solutions needed

"More trains, ships and planes are needed to transport fresh produce," explains Massimo Savini from RLA when talking about the Italian logistics sector.

"Italy does indeed have some limitations due to its hilly and mountain regions, but we need suitable infrastructures as an alternative to road transport. I think we should focus  a lot on railway transport, at least for a few stretches and for some products. For example, I'm thinking about citrus fruit from southern Italy - why not set up a hub in northern Italy (maybe Verona) to gather all the citrus fruit an re-distribute it to Italy and Europe?"

According Savini, companies such as his need to think about a new formula for logistics that takes the last mile into consideration without getting scared about e-commerce.

"I believe in intermodality just like I believe the eastern markets need to be reached via railway or ship, or even by plane, rather than by road. But we lack the culture and the organization to do so. Road transport is essential for the initial and final stretch, but we need an integration. I think that, up until a few decades ago, almost all the fresh produce used to reach Munch by train. Certain habits should be rediscovered."
