The greenhouse enterprises of the Saratov region in Russia have produced over 11.2 thousand tons of vegetable produce since the beginning of 2019. 9.3 thousand tons of those were cucumbers, 1.7 thousand tons of tomatoes, and 137 tons of other vegetables.

The wholesale price for cucumber amounts to $0.67 — 1.45 per kilo, and $1.53 per kilo of tomatoes. According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation, the produce is supplied to the trade units of the Saratov region and is sold at local fairs.

There are 10 enterprises functioning in the area, in Saratov, Bakalhov, Aktarsky, Tatischevsky and Volsky municipal districts. The overall acreage of greenhouse complexes amounts to 113 ha (91 ha of winter ones and 22 of plastic film ones). Contemporary low volume technologies are applied here, vegetable produce is grown in substrates made of mineral cotton or coconut fibre, supplemental nutrition being delivered with the help of dripping systems.

The greenhouses of the Saratov region fully meet the demand of local dwellers for fresh vegetable produce, and a part of it is delivered outside the region.

Last year 37.8 thousand tons of vegetables were harvested both in greenhouses and in the open field, making the Saratov region the leading grower in Privolzhsky federal district.
