Coulant and Chamán, the two newest tomatoes in Almeria

Two new ribbed tomato varieties, the Coulant and the Chamán, have been presented in Vegacañada by Grupo Agroponiente. The tomato specialist has been working together with the seed breeding company Filosem with the aim of obtaining tastier and more aromatic ribbed tomatoes.

In order to properly present the improved qualities of these new tomatoes, a tasting has been carried out, allowing those in attendance, especially buyers and specialists, to check the improvement achieved in terms of flavor.

The new varieties
The Coulant is a Marmande type tomato with a plant of medium vigor and open bearing, with ribbed, flattened and green-necked fruits. The fruit has an intense green color that turns into chocolate tones as it ripens. It has a characteristic and peculiar flavor and texture and a high Brix. In terms of size, the fruits fit in the G or GG categories. It is a variety whose recommended transplant period is between August and early November.

The Chamán is also a Marmande-type tomato, but green, which adapts to long cultivation cycles, with transplants from August to October and a high production. The plant has a medium-high vigor, open bearing and short internodes, with a ribbed, flattened and green-necked fruit, which turns red as it ripens and has a great firmness and a long shelf life.

For Vegacañada, this kind of actions are very important, as they allow the entire production and marketing chain to be familiar with its products, especially flavor tomatoes, which are one of the company's strategic lines.
