Spain: Marijuana in San Javier melon field

Two people were arrested after 850 cannabis plants were found in a melon field near the Mar Menor. The men face charges in San Javier following the discovery by the Guardia Civil of a marijuana plantation hidden in a melon field covered by plastic sheeting. A detailed examination of the plot revealed as many as 850 cannabis sativa plants which were being grown among the legitimate melon crop.

The arrests were made as the result of an investigation which began in April in the fields close to the Mar Menor, and which led to attention being focussed on areas well away from the public eye in the municipalities of San Javier and Torre Pacheco. Eventually the location of the plantation was established, and one of the two men detained was caught in the act of tending to the crop. As well as the plants themselves other items taken into custody include temperature and humidity controls, fertilizers and a motor vehicle which was used by the farmers.

Also, according to murciatoday.com, the search of a property in Los Alcezares resulted in the discovery of 400 grams of marijuana ready for sale to members of the public.
