Most tomato growers and traders are early birds. But it is still special that they came in large numbers to the Breakfast/Knowledge Session of De Ruiter... which started at 5 o'clock in the morning. For these growers and traders, a Knowledge Session about the latest tomato-on-the-vine DRTH1004 of De Ruiter was apparently enough reason to get up so early.
Revelation
During this early breakfast, De Ruiter moreover revealed the 'real' name of the DRTH1004: Radiance. Radiance was put 'in the spotlights' with glow-in-the-dark T-shirts for everybody and illuminating lasers.
During breakfast, Arjan Bimmel (De Ruiter Market Development) told more about Radiance. Characteristic of this new variety are fruits with a dark red color, early production, fresh green parts, and a great presentation in the store. Radiance has a high product potential, and has a broad resistance package.
Nico van Vliet (De Ruiter Trade Partnership) told more about the position of medium TOVs in the market and the growing interest in this variety. Moreover, he presented the results of the consumer tests, which have been conducted on behalf of De Ruiter by Wageningen University & Research.
Growers and traders see opportunities
After breakfast, one of the first growers, Gert van der Spek (owner of Solyco, member of Van Nature), confirmed the information he heard during breakfast, and said he was already growing the variety on 5 hectares.
Remco van der Zeijden (account manager of Van Nature) was also enthusiastic, and saw a lot of opportunities for their trade partners Levarht, Combilo, Haluco and Scherpenhuizen.
Menno Moerdijk (Levarht) confirmed the interest of an important German retailer, who orders 1-kilo packages of Radiance daily. The tomato team of Combilo, such as Philipsen, was very positive about Radiance.
