Record Barbastro tomato production expected this year in Spain

With the free distribution of 6,000 plants of Barbastro pink tomatoes next May 1, a new season is starting for this vegetable, which has become one of the city's best ambassadors, as well as an economic engine, since it generates around 100 jobs throughout the year.

The event will mark the start of the crop's planting. The prospect is to put some 2,300,000 kilos on the market in the early summer, which will entail a new production record, with an increase of 15% over the previous season. About 800,000 plants will be planted, according to the association of gardeners.

The region of Aragon remains the main market for this vegetable, which has a registered trademark. Next in the ranking are Catalonia, Madrid and the Basque Country.

According to the census drawn up by the association, in Somontano there are some 375 orchards cultivating pink tomatoes and selling them as a complement to their domestic economies.
