UK: Demand for strawberries increases with rising temperatures

As the weather improves and Easter approaches people turn to summer fruit. TG Fruits in Brighton, UK, have pushed the boat out this week with Sonsation strawberries from Belgium.

“The strawberries go to auction in Belgium and where the quality is checked,” explains Andy Griffitsh from TG Fruits. “They're graded either up or down depending on the flavour, colour, size and general appearance. The best quality get the golden sticker. Our agent there picks out pallets and sends them over to us, this is what we have on offer this week.”

The Sonsation strawberry is an early, grown in glass houses.

“There is a good trade on strawberries this week as temperatures rise and we are selling at £2.20-£2.50 for a 500g punnet, this is a premium grade.”

UK domestic production has started but its still slow and won’t be up to speed until after Easter.
