Spanish plasticulture, one of the most important in the world

Spain produces 14% of plastics for agriculture in Europe

Plastic is an agricultural tool in permanent development. The companies devoted to the manufacture of plastic products have research as one of their priorities. Proof of this is that each year, their laboratories showcase new developments that respond to the needs of different agricultural producers.

This reality is reflected in international sales. In fact, "Spain markets 14 percent of all agricultural plastics in Europe, ahead of Italy, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, in this order. These five countries combined control approximately 50 percent of the total," says Blanca de Arteche, Director of Institutional Relations and Training of the Agriculture Division of CEPLA.

Spanish Plasticulture is one of the most important in the world, with Andalusia being the Autonomous Region where cultivation under plastic is most widespread. It accounts for 33% of the acreage dedicated to mulching, 81% of small tunnels and 69% of greenhouses.

In modern agriculture, there are plastics for every need; they are manufactured in such a way that they make it possible to set up low cost greenhouses, where temperature management is becoming mor and more efficient. Plastic is also used in reservoirs, padding, silage systems, etc., and has become the basis of an increasingly profitable and productive agriculture. The plastics that are used in agriculture are made with polymers and additives. The former are large molecules that are composed of smaller molecules, and the additives allow an adequate transformation that makes it possible to modify the characteristics of the base resin and thus change its properties.
