Migros has its own greenhouse project in Valais

Retailer as competition for the vegetable gardener?

Migros will soon sell its own hot peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers from Valais. The Association of Swiss Vegetable Producers is watching this project critically.

With its own greenhouse in Collombey-Muraz, Migros joins the row of vegetable growers. The retailer wants to grow peppers, among other things. The reasons for this are not understood by the Association of Swiss Vegetable Producers.

Competition for domestic producers
Domestic production is not subject to import or export taxes and cannot keep up with European competition prices, as the Association tells Swiss vegetable producers in a statement. Migros also seems to have recognized this problem, now wanting to grow tomatoes and cucumbers in addition to hot peppers.

According to the association, Migros will become a competitor for domestic producers. In view of the high spatial planning requirements, it is surprising that Migros received the permit for the construction of the greenhouse. The Association also regrets that no cooperation between the retailer and the Swiss gardeners took place when the project was launched.
