Moldova: Greenhouse vegetables more profitable than apples, plums, grapes and nuts

Moldova is a major fruit exporter, however, they do not make use of their favorable geographical position and climate conditions for greenhouse production development. The economist of the investment department at the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Mr. Andrey Ermak, said this during the conference Greenhouse Business in Moldova: Opportunities and Perspectives.

“Moldova, like most of the countries in our area, remains a net importer of greenhouse vegetables and practically does not export even in the warm seasons, despite the fact that there are all the opportunities for profitable business in the country. It is even possible to export the greenhouse produce at least within the period from April to November”, noted Mr. Ermak in his speech. “With that taking into account a harsh decline of profitability in apple, nuts, plums and grapes in Moldova within the past years, greenhouse vegetable and berry growing can enable a much higher profit, however, it will require investments and relevant knowledge. That is why FAO and EBRD have invited to the conference experts from various countries who will be sharing their experience”, added Mr. Ermak.

The economist mentioned high retail prices for the respective produce in the internal market, relatively cheap labor, moderately warm climate and access to the market of the Russian Federation, a major greenhouse vegetable end market in Eastern Europe, among the factors in favor of the successful development of the greenhouse sphere in Moldova. Apart from that, Moldova is conveniently located next to two big greenhouse vegetable importers, Romania and Poland.
