Sanctions imposed on Spanish company for extracting more water than needed for irrigation

The company Hortifrut España, which is currently extracting underground water from two places in El Alamillo de Almonte, Huelva, in the vicinity of Doñana, will have to pay a 97,723 Euro fine for exceeding the maximum annual water volume allowed for irrigation.

This has been revealed in a resolution from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment of November 2017, now ratified by the National Court in a ruling.

Said resolution also informs that Hortifrut España will have to compensate the Public Hydraulic Domain (DPH) for the damages caused with 29,316.86 Euro.

The entity is also required to refrain from extracting more resources than authorized, as established in the Private Waters Catalog files.

It is considered proven that the entity had extracted 56,508 m3/year and 191,940 m3/year more than permitted from both wells. The resolution thereby confirms an illegal extraction of 248,448 m3 / year of groundwater.
