Bellomo is a company run by the third generation of a family but which took on its current form only in 2010, yet maintaining the essential principles of traditional farming typical of southern Italy.
"We cover 11 hectares and the proximity to the sea combined with the exposure to wind from the west creates favorable conditions for the specialized cultivation of vegetables throughout the year, in both open field and protected environments (i.e. polytunnles or soil-less greenhouses)," reports production manager Giuseppe Bellomo.

"We grow the most delicate species such as basil and winter tomatoes in our technologically-advanced greenhouses. The priority is to keep temperature and humidity constantly monitored to avoid the onset of phytopathologies and therefore minimize treatments with crop protection products."
Soil-less cherry tomatoes
"In addition, we are open to new varieties: we are currently testing some tomato varieties. It is a marmande type available in dark and yellow. Considering the first feedback, it will not disappoint us. Our strength lies in crop diversification."
Dark marmande
In the open fields, the company grows mainly leaf vegetables such as spinach, chard, endive, chicory, lettuce and parsley. In summer, crops such as solanaceae and cucurbitaceae are added (tomatoes, eggplants, bell peppers, chili peppers, zucchini, cucumbers,green beans, etc.).
The focus in winter is on brassicaceae (cauliflower, kohlrabi, Savoy cabbage, cabbage, turnip greens, kale, etc.).

"We are competitive on the market as, around 5 years ago, we have introduced leek, round radicchio, sugarloaf, kale, Jerusalem artichokes, New Zealand spinach, red and purple potatoes, i.e. crops that were entirely new in our area."
"Four years ago we have also started doing tests to assess the cultivation of new species: 20 plants of Cape gooseberries, 150 plants of goji berries and 20 of moringa, much requested by the market for direct sales. We have been focusing on direct sales more and more as it is more profitable."
Basil
"As for the future, we aim to continue specializing in niche products while diversifying sales channels and focusing on e-commerce, especially since with grow products that are not easy to find and that are much in demand by the restaurant industry in Italy and abroad."
