Although the warm and dry summer caused big problems for horticulture companies, 2018 still was a good year, as becomes clear from an analysis of the figures, performed by accounting agency PK Revision. The analysis is based on the accounting results of a large group of growers on Funen, where a quarter of the Danish greenhouse acreage can be found.
The figures show that growers made an average profit of more than 100,000 euros with their primary company activities, after deduction of the wages. This was partially because of the advantageous weather conditions in late summer and the reduction in energy prices.
The least hit by the difficult weather conditions were growers of indoor plants. Their accounting results decreased by only 17% when compared with 2017, which was an extremely good year. The sector in general decreased with 29 percent. For the category "other horticulture companies", which comprises growers of vegetables, herbs, and flower bulbs, the result was 80 percent lower than in 2017. Still, an analysis of the last three years shows that growers in general have been doing well, so more investments are possible in the future.
