New tomato varieties by Sicilian Suntime

"Our main objective is to develop and introduce innovation starting with the search for varieties that best adapt to our areas while at the same time being appreciated both in Italy and abroad. We also put a lot of effort in researching technical means as well as solutions for the problems of our producers," explains Luca Pisani, area manager for Suntime.

Luca Pisani

Suntime started thanks to a collaboration with Yuksel Seed, a Turkish seed company located in Antalya and a leader both on the domestic market as in many Asian and Arab countries. It is a research company constantly investing in technological innovation to improve the quality and reliability of its products.

"Suntime was created by a few young entrepreneurs like me who have always believed in the importance of the agricultural sector. We must not forget that, to reach results, we need to confront and work together with local businesses."

The company is strongly rooted in south-western Sicily and its range includes two tomato varieties that suit the production areas particularly well.

 Chick
"We are among the first to present a small oblong orange tomato that can be harvested both as a single fruit or in bunches. The commercial name is Chick (in the side photo)."

"Sepals are fleshy and the product has good shelf-life and elegant bunches." Plants are medium-vigorous with regular internodes and the foliage is not too covering. In general, the plant is rustic enough to be cultivated in autumn, winter and spring."

"The flavor is sweet and the peel is soft so it is not annoying when eaten."

Redrock
"Redrock is the red bunch variety par excellence. It is a medium-vigorous plant with proportionate foliage that is sturdy enough to resist fungi attacks. It needs care on days with little light as well as interventions with growth regulators. Fruits have a homogeneous shape and a deep red color with thick rachis. It is an ideal variety for exports thanks to its very long shelf-life."

Both varieties have a good resistance to TYLCV, TMV and N.
