The harvesting of Candonga strawberries has started in Basilicata

For Basilicata, strawberries represent the emblem of a whole season. The soil and weather conditions, especially in the coastal area, are perfect for growing this product, so much so that the region is the leader in Italy for strawberry production and commercialization.

Candonga Top Quality® remains the best and most demanded variety by domestic and international markets.

Antonio Ferrara, vice-president Club Candonga, explains that "we started harvesting small quantities a few weeks ago. As temperatures are gradually increasing, production is growing and quality is excellent."

"In Metaponto, orchards are in excellent condition. Candonga strawberries stand out for its bright red color and sugary aromatic flesh."

Quotations are in line with the period average hovering between €4.5 and €5.5/kg. Sabrosa, which is only grown in Basilicata and is sold under the Candonga fragola top quality®  brand, represents 80% of the local cultivars with 800 hectares producing around 40,000 tons.

"Our strawberries are sold on the main Italian and foreign wholesale markets. Quantities available at the moment do not enable us to meet demand, as is usual at the start of a campaign. Over the next few weeks, provided temperatures do not drop considerably, volumes will increase and we will start supplying markets and retailers."

At the Berlin fair, Club Candonga promoted this excellent product as part of the Regione Basilicata stand with the magnificent Matera in the background, this year's European Capital of Culture.

As a few representatives from the Italian Chef Federation (FIC) attended, so visitors could savor the quality of this product. The "Rossini-Candonga®" aperitif was also much appreciated. The flavor of the best strawberries (30% of Candonga flesh) is skillfully blended with naturally-fermented brut spumante wine from Veneto.
