Greenhouse facility fined $5,000 for Ontario Water Resources Act violation

A greenhouse facility was convicted of one violation under the Ontario Water Resources Act and was fined $5,000 plus victim fine surcharge of $1,250 with sixty days to pay the fine.

As part of the ministry's interim greenhouse strategy a ministry order was issued to the greenhouse in 2014 that allowed the operation of the facility's sewage works without a ministry approval, provided that all work order items were completed. The company failed to fully comply with the order. As a result the order was revoked.

In March 2016, ministry staff conducted a facility inspection and found that process waste waters were continuing to be discharged into the storm water pond. As a result, ministry staff advised the company to immediately cease discharging all process and waste waters to the storm water management pond and to submit a complete ministry approval application to the ministry, prepared by a Qualified Consultant. The company failed to comply.

The ministry's Investigations and Enforcement Branch investigated and laid charges resulting in one conviction.
