New light producer to shake up the market

MegaPhoton appoints Robert de Goey as new CEO

A new player is about to shake up the market for horticultural light assimilation. MegaPhoton offers both HPS and LED fixtures. The company has been producing these for many years already – but always as private label for other brands. Now they’re approaching the market directly, with Robert de Goey as their new CEO.

800,000 – that’s quite an amount. It’s the number of complete light fixtures Megaphoton has sold worldwide last year alone. The company was founded more than 15 years ago by Dr. Jinlong Du, who holds a PhD in the field of electro engineering. Initially the company only produced the electronic ballasts for the fixtures. A few years ago, they bought an HPS lamp factory and started supplying the complete fixture, consisting of a electronic ballast, a reflector and the actual lamp. Since that time they’ve launched their own brand: MegaPhoton. Three years ago an LED factory was added to the business as well. MegaPhoton now employs over 700 people with one large factory and 7 sales offices worldwide. Still, they’re relatively unknown in the horticultural industry.

LED and HPS market
Robert de Goey was appointed recently. Being the former director of Dalsem Greenhouse Projects, he knows the international greenhouse industry very well and saw opportunities for MegaPhoton straight away. With the new headquarters to be based in the Netherlands, MegaPhoton International is to focus on the North American and European market. “In both the LED and the HPS market there are enormous opportunities for growth. Since the MegaPhoton products were sold under private label before, we know they are the high standard the horticultural world expects. Since we’re operating directly now, we’ve shortened the chain from producer to grower. This way we can compete at a lower price level.”

In the HPS range, MegaPhoton currently offers 600W and 1000W fixtures – and there’s more to come. “The durability and the stability of the products are important in our R&D. MegaPhoton invests a lot in research and innovations. Within a short time we are to launch a fixture with the highest light PPF output in the world and a durability of over +20,000 effective burning hours”, Robert shares. “It will offer growers to increase their crop and will bring significant savings in energy-use as well as in their overall installation and maintenance cost.”

“For the LED products - Toplighting & Interlighting - we currently are at the same quality level as the main competitor in the market – something that we’re not only saying, but also proving by adding stronger warranty conditions than anybody else in the market. On top of that it’s the price that distinguishes us.”

Robert de Goey will work alongside the chairman of the company Dr. Du.

Collaborations
In doing so, MegaPhoton values the collaborations with other technical suppliers in the industry highly. “Both greenhouse builders and instalment companies are of great value to the industry. These months we’re trying to meet many of them, since we can only grow together.”

Robert is known as a modest person – but in this matter his enthusiasm and also his big words are remarkable. Highest quality, lowest price, deals not to be matched - what’s going on here? “I’m surprised by it myself as well”, he laughs. “It’s just the opportunity we’re bringing to the market. Working with a great team,  supplying a high-quality product at a competitive price – we truly are to shake up the market with our assortment and knowledge. I am convinced also in Europe and North-America we are to grow to be the biggest supplier of greenhouse lights within the next couple of years – and I can’t wait to do so.”
