Artificial vision system on grading machine launched at Fruit Logistica

The Sorma Group range has been further expanded with an artificial vision system installed on its own SormaTech grader. InstanDEF-QI 2.0 is the new software to be launched by the Cesena-based company during Fruit Logistica in Berlin (Hall 9 stand D-13), to be held from 6 to 8 February.

Designed to enable extremely precise fruit grading, the new grader is the missing link that completes the Group’s full line of post-harvest processing machinery.

“Investing in innovative machines means investing in our customers,” comments Daniele Fabbri, General Manager of Sorma Iberica. “Our main aim is to offer our customers the best equipment to enable them to meet final consumers’ needs, in-house.”

As well as being much simpler, the new user-friendly interface enables the operator to modify and customise defect detection options in real time.

Thanks to the InstanDEF-QI 2.0 system, SormaTech is now able to define the quality of the individual fruit with greater precision. Through complex multi-spectrum interfacing algorithms, developed by the Sorma Iberica R&D centre, the number of images analysed for each fruit has been doubled, delivering more precise detection of both external and internal defects.

“If they see one or more damaged fruit in the pack, consumers might decide not to buy,” explains Daniele Fabbri. “So it’s not just a question of production efficiency; it’s first and foremost a matter of ethics. Through this new technology, Sorma Group further underlines its commitment to fighting food waste.”

The new “SmartClass” function allows automatic setting of the grading potentiometers: after capturing various fruit samples, the machine is able to recognise the product’s class, considerably shortening the time otherwise necessary to create specific programs for grading fruit of different varieties.

During the last few years, Sorma Group has further perfected the performance of SormaTech, with additional improvements to the version already assigned the bronze medal at the Macfrut Innovation Award 2017, further upgrading the software’s calculation capacity. The outcome of this improvement, together with full territorial coverage, enables Sorma Group to offer a world-beating before and after sales service.

Automated sorting of fruit by weight, color, diameter, shape and internal and external quality: in hall 9, stand D-13, the company will be exhibiting the latest version of the artificial vision system that completes the Sorma Group post-harvest machinery offering.
