UK vegetable firm attempts world record for number of sprouts eaten per minute

Veg UK Ltd, based at Cherry Trees Farm in Ham, near Deal, has teamed up with The Crown Inn in Finglesham in a bid to be crowned the masters of the festive favourite. Staff at the vegetable firm will try to break the world record for the most Brussels sprouts eaten in one minute. The group aim to beat a record set by Linus Urbanec of Sweden in 2008, when he ate 31 cooked Brussels in one minute.

The rules state the greens must be eaten using a cocktail stick and only one sprout can be spiked, eaten and swallowed at a time. Managing director Julian Pitts will be competing along with his employees Rob Milton, Shane Talling, Debbie Bembridge and Sarah Friend.

He told kentonline.co.uk: "It's just a bit of fun. We sell tonnes of sprouts every year in the UK as well as exporting them to Europe. They'll be supplied by local growers Trevor and Steven Bradley and cooked by the pub. Everyone is welcome to join in or cheer us on."

They will be filmed and then sent off to the Guinness Book of World Records adjudicators for consideration. Entry is £3 with all money raised going to help the homeless.
