Turkey Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association Chairman, Ali Kavak, said: “Turkish growers are producing around 50 million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables annually. As exporters, we export around 3.5 million tons and we expect around 10-15% increase in our export figures.
The summer season was too long which is impacting citrus fruit exports negatively, however we still expect an increase in export volumes due to the improving relations with Russia which is the main export destination for our products. We sell almost 40 % of all fresh exports to Russia and we believe this percentage will increase to 50 % this year.
We are also seeking alternative markets and specifically focusing on Far East Asia. We have been holding promotional activities in countries such as China, Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore. We want to enter into these markets and expand our market portfolio.
Regarding tomato prices, due to decreasing exports, tomato production has declined considerably. Russia especially lowered its tomato imports significantly and has set up its own greenhouse to grow tomatoes. In 5 years, they might stop importing tomatoes altogether. That’s why Turkish tomato growers are concerned about the Russian market and they are lowering their production to protect themselves from the risk. The main reason behind the increase in domestic markets is completely related to this decline in production.”
