Turkey: Tomato growers in Karacabey request increase in prices

Karacabey Chamber of Agriculture Chairman, Erhan Erdem, requested the tomato prices promised by big factories to the local growers in the area to be increased from 0.05 USD per kg to 0.075 USD per kg, as a result of the drop in the Turkish currency. The price was promised in January, 2018 and Turkish currency has lost close to 30% of its value since then. A lot of growers have costs directly connected to the foreign exchange rate as they purchase fertilizers and chemicals from abroad. That’s why their production costs have gone up significantly and they are demanding change in prices to stay profitable.
