Turkey: Tomato prices the latest to skyrocket

After the concerns over high prices of potatoes and onions in recent months, the latest worry among Turkish shoppers is the high price of tomatoes. Allegedly they are now on sale for as much as 8 lira ($1.74) a kilo.

Turkish tomato growers have had trouble gaining access to Russian markets following a complete cut-off after the downing of a Russian jet in Turkish airspace in 2015, leading many to choose instead to grow bananas this year in their greenhouses. However, this crop has also been hit by disease this season.

With Russia recently re-opening its markets to Turkish tomatoes, this year’s harvest has been insufficient to satisfy domestic demand, claims ahvalnews.com. It is hoped that prices will decrease again over the course of the summer.
