India: Vegetable prices dropping drastically in Hyderabad

Vegetable prices have dropped drastically in Hyderabad within a month of the prices taking an upward curve. Prices of the vegetables even decreased by more than half; tomato prices came down to around 5 rupees (0.07 euros) per kg in the Rythu Bazars whereas they are being sold at around 10 rupees per kg in retail markets.

Tomato prices plummeted in two weeks due to the arrival of large stocks from adjoining districts. Vegetables such as lady’s finger, brinjal, chilli, french beans, carrot, field beans, and others too saw declining prices. Vegetable sellers are stating that the drop in prices is only due to the excessive production and the push of more produce onto city markets.

While homemakers are surely rejoicing over the dropped prices, the farmers are left in the lurch as they have to sell their produce at low prices, according to an article by thehansindia.com.

And the abundance of produce might still be enlarged, as the Telangana Government is planning to introduce the concept of crop colonies in the 30-km radius of Hyderabad to meet the increasing demand of vegetables in the State capital.

However, a huge infrastructure such as greenhouses, shade nets, 'pandals', storage space including cold storage, processing facilities and sufficient number of extension officers to guide the farmers from time to time is required. At present, the city gets 75% of vegetable supplies from other States.
