Ukraine: Tomato prices fall by up to 40%

Tomato prices are falling quickly on the Ukrainian market, reports APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits. According to its daily monitoring, the product became 33-40% cheaper over the course of last week alone.

At the end of last week, greenhouses were managing to sell tomatoes at prices oscillating between 15 and 18 UAH/kg (0.48-0.57 Euro/kg), while a week earlier the prices for this product started from 25 UAH/kg (0.80 Euro/kg).

Producers explain that this sharp drop in prices is a result of the fairly plentiful supply of tomatoes on the market. At the same time, a significant part of these volumes consist of substandard products. Moreover, there are also sales of tomatoes from film greenhouses, which producers are ready to sell for 8 UAH/kg (0.26 Euro/kg), and the situation is only aggravated by the start of tomato imports from Turkey, even though the supply of such products is rather limited for now.

At the same time, the demand for tomatoes in the Ukrainian market is low and this naturally has an impact on prices. The main sales channel is local retail chains. Also, exporters have little interest in purchasing.

It should be noted, however, that despite the sharp reductions, tomato prices in Ukraine are on average 21% higher than in the first days of November 2016. In any case, market players believe that the negative price trend in this segment may continue, given the rather plentiful supply.
