In addition to the 14 hectares of greenhouse strawberry cultivation in three locations, Jong Fruit from The Netherlands adds 2 more hectares of greenhouse blackberry cultivation to their assortment. "I see many similarities with the present blackberry cultivation and the strawberry cultivation of 25 years ago when I entered this business," says Rob van der Wouw. "About the strawberries it was also said back then that the cultivation would reach its maximum and just look where the cultivation has gone now."
Jong Fruit was given this opportunity of starting with the blackberry production by taking over the greenhouse from the nearby Schoenmakers family, who in the first few years will rent back half of the acreage from Jong Fruit, so that the company can gradually grow into the blackberry cultivation. "We also emphatically discussed this step with our customer The Greenery, who indicated that they were looking to expand with blackberries."
"Part of our broader business strategy is the construction of over 30,000 square meters of tray fields for the propagation of our own plants. We also developed our own plant material for the blackberries," says Rob. "We are not looking for the easiest product, because the blackberry cultivation is even more labor-intensive than the strawberries. With the strawberries we were a pioneer in year-round lighted cultivation and we are looking how we can also stretch the blackberry cultivation to ensure a constant high quality in each season."
In addition, the entrepreneur also has a clear vision for the blackberry sales. "Our goal is to further promote blackberry consumption. Together with The Greenery, we want to supply the retail market with the highest quality blackberries. In my opinion, not a single retailer is interested in day trading. We therefore want to organize a sales program rather than wait by the clock for someone to show interest."
