Australia: Warm weather kick-starts Tasmanian berry season

The warmer weather Tasmania has enjoyed over the past week gave the state’s berries a boost and producers are predicting a bumper season this summer.

Hillwood Berries picked the first juicy strawberries of the season from the stock planted in July on Wednesday and posted they were “sweet and juicy” on Facebook.

Most of these berries will go to Driscoll’s for distribution to Australian supermarkets or sold at farmer’s markets.

Costa Berry Farms’ harvest season is also ready to start, with the call going out for pickers and supervisors throughout the state.

Regional manager Stephen Beckwith said the harvest for strawberries starts in late October and runs through until May.

Raspberries and blackberries start in late November, running through to the end of May and blueberries start in early December, running until the end of March.
