US (PA): Aquaponics facility opens doors for farm tour

Six farms, a high school aquaponics lab, a Quaker meetinghouse and the Reading Area Water Authority welcomed visitors during the recent Berks Agriculture Resource Network farm tour.

The event raises money for the group, which promotes agriculture and related food industries through economic development efforts and education.

Focusing on Maidencreek, Perry, Richmond and Ontelaunee townships, municipalities around Lake Ontelaunee, the tour guided 193 visitors through Schuylkill Valley High School's 10-year-old ag program, which includes a greenhouse and aquaponics setup. The school's crop of aquaponically grown basil is used by a nearby pizzeria.
