US (MI): St. Michael expands greenhouse program

Students at the St. Michael Academy in Petoskey first began growing produce in a small greenhouse near the school in spring 2016.

Now, students and staff are planning to expand the greenhouse and grow fresh food year round for Brother Dan’s Food Pantry.

“I think the students are enjoying it,” said Jennifer Eustice, biology, chemistry and arts teacher. “We’re learning as we go, which is always a fun process.”

Initially, the greenhouse only nurtured lettuce. The range of produce has since grown to include tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, cabbage and broccoli.

“We’re looking at trying to sustain it throughout the seasons,” Eustice said. “The Northern Michigan winters have been hard on our processes in the past, so we’re looking to be able to have it be a long-standing project.”

To accomplish that, a heater has recently been installed, and Eustice said they are working to hook up the gas line, “but there will be a working furnace in it for the winter.”
