US (RI): Two-level hydroponic greenhouse coming to Newport

The project to construct a two-level hydroponic greenhouse on city-owned land in the north end that is expected to produce 3 million heads of lettuce and more than 750,000 pounds of fresh leafy greens annually is on track to be operational by November 2018, according to the city’s partner in the project.

“It’s progressing really well,” said Matthew Kennedy, managing director of Converge.

“We have to financially close on the project — it’s more than a $25 million investment,” he said. “We’ve been working together with the state and city to put together a financing package.”

The name of the local enterprise is Newport Advanced Hydroponics LLC, but it is part of a much larger operation.

Hydronov Inc. of Mirabel, Quebec, Canada, will be building and then operating the greenhouse that will feature a deep-water hydroponic agriculture system. The company has built more than 3 million square feet of hydroponic greenhouse systems currently in operation worldwide, including North America and Southeast Asia.

The owner and operator of the local plant will be part of the U.S. division of Hydroserre Inc. of Mirabel, a major operator of hydroponic greenhouses and producer of the Mirabel lettuce brand. The new greenhouse here will bring the company close to markets in this region, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and New York, according to the plan.
