Level of agricultural product prices in Latvia dropped by 0.9 %

Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) in Latvia show that in 2016, the total price index of agricultural output fell by 0.9%, which was mainly due to the 1.5% decline in prices of crop products.

Decline in the price index of crop products was mainly affected by the drop in the grain and vegetable purchase prices (of 8.3% and 9.9%, respectively).

In 2016, the average purchase price of grain was the lowest recorded since 2012; it diminished from 207.20 euros per tonne to 132.31 euros per tonne. Compared to 2015, the indicator fell by 8.3%, and compared to 2012, by 36.1%. The price reduction observed last year was influenced also by the poor quality of the grain purchased resulting from the bad weather conditions.

Increase was observed in purchase prices of potatoes as well as fruit and berries – by 4.1 % and 6.2 %, respectively, compared to the year before.
