US (WI): Work begins on West Salem aquaponics facility

West Salem’s latest agricultural venture took a big step forward this week after work began on the district’s new aquaponics facility, which will replace the district’s existing greenhouse.

When complete later this year, that facility will house four 110 gallon fish tanks filled with hundreds of tilapia. Byproducts from raising the fish will produce all the necessary nutrients to grow hundreds of pounds of produce in hydroponic troughs.

Agriculture teacher Kelly Rueckheim said the system is very efficient once it’s up and running, it should produce between 2,600 and 4,200 heads of lettuce greens, and 400 pounds of fish annually.

The facility will serve both to educate students about alternative forms of agriculture and to feed students.
