US (IA): Baptist community garden to install greenhouse

A "hoop house" greenhouse under construction in Davenport will make a difference in the neighborhoods around the Hilltop Campus Village.

A group of churches is collaborating on the effort, and the structure is being raised on the east side of First Baptist Church, 1401 Perry St. Fresh produce from it will be made available free to area residents.

"A greenhouse will, in effect, extend the growing season on both the front and back ends, allowing for the cultivation and harvesting of a broader array of crops over a longer period of time," said Ken Washburn, project coordinator for the greenhouse and a member of First Baptist.

First Baptist has had a community garden for years and has an abundant supply of water, tools and good Iowa soil to offer for the project.

The People Uniting Neighbors and Churches, or PUNCH, organization will help supply volunteers, but aid from neighbors, and throughout the area, also is welcome.
