US (KS): Aquaponics farm eyeing comeback

Gary Poulton, owner of Wholesome Meadows Farm, and his wife, Tami, opened an aquaponics greenhouse last spring. In November, they posted on the farm’s Facebook page that they were stepping back from the business for a while.

“We have determined that we need to step away from it for a period of time to reassess how we might be able to ‘tweak’ our operation so that it is more financially feasible for the long term,” according to the November post.

Poulton said Friday that after three years of working to get the greenhouse open, he needed a break. Also, being a new business, the winter season was slower.

Unlike some businesses, Poulton can’t shut down the aquaponics system to just 20 or 30 percent. It’s either all or nothing.

He said he is working on a new strategy, which he will unveil in about a month.
