US (MN): Owatonna market grows fresh hydroponic veggies

A market focused on connecting area residents with fresh, locally grown produce and products has opened in Owatonna.

Greens Market, owned and operated by Ron Phillips and Jason and Kirie Sarazine, opened its doors at 216. W. Bridge St. last week after months of work at the space.

“This will be a farmers market every day,” Phillips said.

Phillips said the initial purpose of the Greens Market was to provide a venue for local farmers and artisans to sell their products, but the other is to offer “local, nutrient-dense, non-[genetic modified organism]” fruits and vegetables year-round.

We just want to bring good food to the community so they don’t need to eat the other stuff,” he said. “We want to give them an option.”

Another way the Greens Market offers fresh produce is through hydroponics — something Phillips, who moved to Owatonna a year and a half ago from Colorado, learned about when he moved his outdoor garden indoors.

In a room behind the market, Phillips and Sarazine grow a variety of lettuces and herbs with hydroponics, which uses mineral nutrient solutions in water without soil, three ways.
