Spain: Rise of prices at origin due to the cold

The lack of supply in European markets due to the low temperatures and adverse weather conditions has given a boost to vegetable prices at origin, especially those of aubergines, courgettes, tomatoes and artichokes.

The Statistics department of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment (Mapama) revealed that this trend has already been observed in the latest report on average national agricultural prices for the period from 9 to 15 January 2017.

According to this information, the price at origin of aubergines rose by 131.96% compared to the first week of the year, reaching 169.60 €/100 kg. Courgettes have gone up by 60.12% (225.46 €/100 kg); tomatoes by 45.94% (85.93 €/100 kg) and artichokes by 44.4% (115.86 €/100 kg).

When compared to the first fifteen days of this year, the price increases have amounted to 101.86% for courgettes, +89.79 % for aubergines, +45.74% for tomatoes and +33.47% for artichokes.

Green beans also recorded a sharp price increase the week before; specifically, by 34.52% (235.69 €/100 kg), while the price at origin of cauliflowers increased by 22.15% (42.35 €/100 kg); that of chards by 15.51% (53.19 €/100 kg), and that of romaine lettuce by 12.71% (23.44 €/100 kg), while potato prices remained relatively stable, with a slight 0.88% increase (25.58 €/100 kg).

Meanwhile, as in previous weeks, citrus fruits have so far not been significantly affected by the harsh weather conditions, although the greater presence of later varieties, more appreciated at the moment, has pushed prices at origin back up, with clementine prices at an average of 24.57 €/100 kg (+17.66%).

This rise, however, contrasts with the lower price paid for Navel oranges (-9.55%, € 22.87/100 kg) and lemons (-4.51%, € 27.04/100 kg), which is again largely due to the declines in Malaga's markets.

The Valencian agrarian organization AVA-Asaja estimates that frost has already caused damage to at least 3,500 hectares up until 18 January, although citrus fruits, with half of the harvest already completed, have hardly been affected.

Artichokes and beans have been the most affected vegetables in the counties of La Hoya de Buñol, Camp de Túria, La Costera, L'Horta or La Ribera, but damage has also been recorded to crops in the regions of Murcia and Navarra, namely to Iceberg and Romaine lettuce, broccoli, cucumber or aubergines, whose prices have doubled or tripled in the first weeks of January given the lack of supply and inability to meet the demand coming from Europe.

It is also worth noting that, despite the damage, sources from this association believe that, for now, these are not as severe as initially expected, although the situation could still worsen depending on how temperatures develop and what their impact is on various open ground crops.
