US (MO): Canton High School looking for a greenhouse builder

Canton High School is getting a greenhouse.

There is just one hitch standing in the way: The school needs to find someone willing to build it.

On two recent occasions the Canton R-5 School District received no responses to its request for bids to construct the 24- by 48-foot domed structure, which will be erected next to the school's vocational agriculture building.

CHS Principal Jesse Uhlmeyer is not worried.

"A greenhouse is kind of an unusual thing to build," he said. "But we have a prospective contractor" who indicated he may be willing to submit a bid the next time the project is advertised.

"We're still going through that process, but I think this next time around we should have somebody," he said.

Lezlie Durst, the school's agriculture instructor and FFA adviser, is hopeful a contractor can be hired for construction next summer. She is hoping the greenhouse will be fully operational for the start of the 2017-18 school year.
