US (NE): Kearney could allow urban farming

Kearney may soon have a greener downtown.

The city’s policy on urban farming is up for debate at Friday’s Kearney Planning Commission meeting.

The commission will discuss code amendments regarding urban farming, which is the use of property for the cultivation of horticultural crops. It is not currently permitted. The proposed amendments would allow for the growth of produce and horticultural crops in nonagricultural areas.

Brent Yaw is requesting alterations to the code in order to hydroponically grow crops in downtown Kearney. Yaw intends to provide lettuce and other greens to local businesses from a location at 2000 First Ave., south of the Kearney Public Library. The plants would be grown in modified shipping containers outfitted with hydroponic growing equipment.
