US (FL): Traders Hill aquaponics farm expands

Traders Hill Farm, the largest aquaponics farm in Northeast Florida, is quadrupling its size, with a new 40,000 square-foot facility.

The Hilliard-based farm grows organic, non-GMO romaine lettuce using the waste from fish to fertilize the plants. Since its start in 2013, the company has grown from the capacity of growing 5,000 plants to 125,000.

Now, Angela TenBroeck, the farm’s founder, is planning to open a second location, this time in Northwest Jacksonville.

“We plan to build a five acre property along the I-10 and I-95 corridor that is five times bigger than today,” TenBroeck told the Business Journal. “We feel we can provide more jobs in that area and change the landscape of the farming in our region.”

TenBroeck said the farm is seeking investment and business partners for the 200,000 square-foot facility, which she wants to build in a year-and-a-half and would cost about $12 million.
