A Harrisburg entrepreneur has proposed growing medical marijuana in secure greenhouses at the Wharf Road Industrial Park in Washington Township.
Meg Golden met with community leaders on Monday to discuss the project. She answered more than 20 questions at an event hosted by the Waynesboro Area Chamber of Commerce.
“We needed to get all the people in a room and see if they’re in favor of it,” Washington Township Manager Michael Christopher said. “Everybody laughs when you first mention it, but people are producing medicine to help people. It’s like finding a medicinal plant in the Amazon rainforest, only this one is homegrown and a weed, so to speak.”
Golden is CEO of SQCP LLC, which describes itself as “committed to cultivating and dispensing high-quality marijuana in a safe, compliant and environmentally low-impact ways to residents in south-central Pennsylvania.”
The growing operation could be one of 25 allowed under Pennsylvania’s Medical Marijuana Act. The law, signed earlier this year, establishes ground rules for growing, dispensing and taxing medical marijuana.
SQCP proposes to build four greenhouses on 11 acres at the industrial park east of Waynesboro, according to a sketch plan presented to the township. The company preferred the southern exposure of the lot, Christopher said.
