CAN (AB): 800,000 square foot marijuana greenhouse opening in Leduc
The building, called Aurora Sky, will be 800,000 square feet and will be able to produce 100,000 kilograms of marijuana annually.
Barbara Engelbart-McKenzie, the executive director of the Leduc/Nisku Economic Development Association, told Global News that the facility will be one-of-a-kind.
“We’ve been really working on an agri-business platform here, so we consider this part of that platform,” Engelbart-McKenzie said. “Having this sort of innovative, state of the art greenhouse here is fantastic for the region. Though it’s a new industry, we understand the changes that are coming in medical cannabis and prescription marijuana. We really believe this is a huge opportunity here. This will be the largest faculty of its kind in the Edmonton region.”
Engelbart-McKenzie said that it’s a great chance to boost their economy.
“We’ve been working really hard to diversify here, Engelbart-McKenzie said. “Agri-business is a huge opportunity for us. It’s long-term, it’s sustainable. It’s taking our resources and converting them into something that is value added. So that 200 jobs that’s not oil and gas related, we’re really passionate about that. It’s a huge opportunity for us to develop that market even more and create long term, sustainable employment that is not subject to market fluctuations.”
