Canada: Feds to re-open Quebec experimental farm

Ottawa is reopening the Frelighsburg Experimental Farm in southern Quebec, Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced Friday – five years after it was abandoned by the Harper government.

“Science is a powerful tool for environmental action on Canadian farms. This research in Frelighsburg will help our farmers increase production to feed a growing population, while protecting our environment — a win for farmers and Canadians,” MacAulay said in a release.

The experimental farm, known for its fruit research, was closed by the previous Conservative government in 2012. The move, said Conservative MP Pierre Lemieux at the time, was meant to better streamline resources.

“When it comes to different facilities in the recent budget, combining labs and expertise will make sure that this important work is carried out in better equipped facilities with better resources,” Lemieux told the House of Commons on May 4, 2012.

Liberal MP Denis Paradis, whose riding is home to the farm, had been pushing for the farm to be reopened. Paradis, whose brother Pierre is Quebec’s agriculture minister, launched a committee in 2014 to look at various options for the property. The committee is said to have reported their findings to MacAulay.
