Australia: Queensland lettuce grower weathers the storm
South east Queensland experiences a range of different weather phenomena in the summer months, from freak storm cells that bring heavy rain, strong winds and hail to dry heat waves.
Three weeks ago a storm cell hit Russell Fingleton's hydroponic lettuce farm at Pomona on the Sunshine Coast, doing $12,000 worth of damage in a matter of minutes.
"It lasted for 10 minutes, so it was about a thousand dollars' worth of damage per minute," he said.
"The other property got smashed with jagged golf ball sized hail and did a lot of damage over there."
Fortunately Mr Fingleton has a second farm on the other side of Pomona, which meant he was able to keep growing and selling lettuce.
