US (MO): Silex FFA awarded $10,000 grant from Monsanto

The Silex agriculture and biology departments will be receiving an upgrade.

At the monthly board of education meeting held Oct. 12, the departments were presented with a $10,000 grant from Monsanto through the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education Program. The school district was recommended for the grant by local farmers and Ag and Biology departments collaborated on the grant. The funds will be used to build a hydroponic and aquaponic system in the school’s greenhouse.

“We are very excited about it,” said Silex science teacher Pattie Henke. “We have been working on the greenhouse and the plants and we want to expand it for our students, because this is one of the new things coming up in agriculture. We want our students to have the opportunity to explore aquaponics and hydroponics.”

Monsanto representative and 2007 Silex graduate Brad Eisenbath says that he is privileged to be able to give this grant back to help his home community.

“I’m very privileged and glad that this grant came to this school,” said Eisenbath. “Obviously it means a lot to me. This is a big honor and I’m very excited on behalf of myself and Monsanto for working for a company that would do this for my hometown. It is a great privilege.”
